Thursday was the first day back to running at the US Track & Field Trails. The runners, coaches, & fans all got Tuesday & Wednesday off. Personally I am not sure I needed a day off.
Yesterday, we started out by driving about 70 minutes to the McKenzie River Trial. It was amazingly beautiful and cool! Yes my friends in Austin it was about 65 degrees or cooler in some places. We ran about 1 hour and 15 minutes up the river. Steve really wanted to keep going, I did a little because it was some dam beautiful but luckily we turned around & ran back. The surface was very soft, which made it a lot nicer at the last 20 minutes of the run.
After the run we walked back to the river to soak. Steve could not handle the pain of 40 degree water, but since this is a 60 mile week for me I was happy to tough out the ice pick feeling as my legs went numb. It was cold is an understatement. It makes Barton Springs pool feel like a warm bath.
After the run we headed up to the water falls to check them out. The water of course was amazingly blue & clear and apparently flowing a lot more than usually, because of the amount of snow they had received this winter/spring. Actually the pass that takes you the short way to Bend was still closed because of snow.
We headed back to Eugene after the run ate some food, showered & headed to the trials. I am not sure if you all have been following Letsrun.com, but there was a full page worth of comments on Adam Goucher. The talk is all about him being allowed to get into the 10k after dropping out the the 5k where he was not only not going to win but he did not have the qualifying standard for the Olympics and probably was not going to get it. Many people believe it is not fair that got in as the 32 place and about 8 other guys did not get invitations to run the 10k at the trials. It’s a lot of fun to read everyone bitch about this. Many people believe he got in only because he runs for Nike, so there is a lot of Nike haters on the forum and even more people believe his Coach Alberto Salazar is a cheater, (drugs while competing that was the reason for the heart issues) so they don’t like him because he trains with a cheater coach.
Anyway at the meet yesterday there were lots of Adam Goucher comments and none of them were positive, but all of them were funny to me. We watch the first round of the 1500 which will be super exciting to see the next round & then the very last event is the 1500 finals for the men. Right now Leo Manzano made it out of the first round (1500 meter for Texas) and then in the men’s steeple chase Jacob Morse made it to the finals of the Steeplechase and the finals for him are Saturday at 2:45. And we saw Jeremy Warner only get 2nd place in the 400 meters, and it really was not that fast of a time. Interesting to watch that at the Olympics.
On a funny side note, I was reading alot of Letsrun.com yesterday and found Steve Sisson mentioned. Check it out.
